What makes a good username
A good username is easy to remember, easy to type and says something about you without giving away private details. It should still feel right in a few years, so avoid tying it to a phase you may grow out of.
Username limits on popular platforms
- X (Twitter): up to 15 characters, using letters, numbers and underscores.
- Instagram: up to 30 characters, using letters, numbers, periods and underscores.
- TikTok: up to 24 characters, using letters, numbers, underscores and periods.
- YouTube handles: 3 to 30 characters.
If you want one name everywhere, keep it between 3 and 15 characters and use only letters, numbers and underscores. That fits all of these platforms.
Protect your privacy
- Leave out your birth year, age, street, school or workplace.
- Use different names for accounts you want to keep separate, such as gaming and professional profiles.
- For gaming and forums, a name that is not linked to your real identity is often the safer choice.
Tips for memorable usernames
- Combine two ideas. A name plus an interest, like "alexchess", or two interests, like "chesscoffee".
- Use sound. Alliteration and rhythm make names stick: "daringdana", "pixelpanda".
- Keep it readable. Skip swapped characters, such as 3 for E, and long strings of underscores.
- Say it out loud. If you need to spell it every time, it is too complicated.
- Read it as one word. Some combinations form unintended words once the spaces disappear. Check before you commit.
Professional or playful?
For work profiles, portfolios and freelance accounts, a version of your real name is easiest for clients to find and trust. For gaming and hobby accounts, creativity matters more than findability, so have fun with it.
