Bio length limits by platform
- Instagram: 150 characters.
- TikTok: 80 characters.
- X (Twitter): 160 characters.
- LinkedIn headline: 220 characters, with a separate About section of up to 2,600 characters for the longer story.
Spaces and emojis count toward these limits. Platforms change their rules from time to time, so if a bio does not fit, trim it in the app.
A formula that works anywhere
Who you are, plus who you help or what you post, plus proof or personality, plus a call to action.
For a LinkedIn headline: "B2B copywriter for software startups | Landing pages and onboarding emails | 8 years writing for SaaS". For TikTok: "Easy home workouts for beginners. New video daily."
Tips for every platform
- Lead with the most useful words. On small screens, the first few words do most of the work.
- Use words people search for. On LinkedIn and Instagram especially, your role and niche help the right people find you.
- Show, do not claim. A concrete result says more than "passionate marketer", but only use numbers you can back up.
- Keep one consistent message. Your bios can differ in length and tone, but a visitor who finds you on two platforms should recognize the same person or brand.
- Give one next step. Follow for a series, book a call, visit a shop. More than one call to action splits attention.
Match the tone to the platform
LinkedIn readers expect a clear professional summary. Instagram and TikTok allow more personality and emojis. X rewards short, sharp lines. The same person can sound slightly different on each, as long as the facts stay the same.
Review it regularly
Update your bio when your offer, role or focus changes. An old bio that still promotes last year's offer makes a profile look inactive.
