Username or name: two different fields
An Instagram profile has two names. The username is your unique handle, the one after the @ in your profile link. The name is the display name in bold on your profile, and it does not have to be unique. Both can show up when people search, so use them together: a clean, memorable username and a name field that adds a keyword, such as "Sara | Home Baker in Dubai".
Instagram username rules
- Up to 30 characters.
- Letters, numbers, periods and underscores only. No spaces or other symbols.
- Each username is unique, so popular words are often taken.
What makes a good Instagram name
- Easy to say and spell. If you tell someone your handle out loud, they should find you on the first try.
- Short. Shorter handles are easier to remember, tag and fit on business cards and packaging.
- Clear about you. A hint of your niche, like "bakes", "studio" or "fit", tells visitors what to expect.
- Room to grow. "sarabakescupcakes" is limiting if you later sell bread and cakes too. "sarabakes" leaves room.
- Clean. Avoid strings of numbers, multiple underscores and swapped letters. They look like spam accounts and are hard to remember.
When your first choice is taken
Add a short, meaningful word instead of numbers: your city, "studio", "co", "hq" or "the". Try a period between words. Or rethink the angle: a word linked to your niche can be more memorable than your full name.
Before you claim it
- Check the same handle on the other platforms you use, so people can find you everywhere.
- For a business, make sure the name does not copy another brand or trademark.
- Keep personal details such as your birth year or home address out of a public handle.
