What to put in an Instagram bio
Your bio has 150 characters to answer three questions for a new visitor: who are you, what will I get if I follow, and what should I do next? A simple formula covers all three:
- Who you are or what you do: "Wedding photographer in Dubai".
- What makes you different or what you post: "Natural light, real moments".
- A call to action: "Now booking next season, link below".
Use every part of the profile
- Name field. The name shown on your profile is separate from your username and can appear in Instagram search. Adding a keyword, such as "Sara | Dubai Wedding Photographer", can help the right people find you.
- Username. Keep it short, easy to spell and consistent with your other channels. Instagram usernames can use letters, numbers, periods and underscores, up to 30 characters.
- Links. Point visitors to the one page that matters most right now: a booking page, a shop or a free guide.
- Category and contact buttons. Business and creator profiles can show a category and contact options, which saves space in the bio itself.
Tips for a bio that converts
- Lead with what visitors care about, not with your life story.
- Be specific. "Healthy family dinners in 20 minutes" tells people far more than "Food lover".
- Use emojis as signposts, not decoration. One at the start of a line can work like a bullet point.
- Update your call to action when your focus changes: a launch, an event, a new offer.
- Write in the language your audience uses. A bilingual audience may prefer a bilingual bio.
Check before you save
Instagram will not let you save a bio over 150 characters, and emojis count toward the limit. Paste your favorite option into the app and trim a word or two if it does not fit.
