October 13, 2026. Retell AI charges $0.07 to $0.31 a minute for an AI voice agent on its pay-as-you-go plan, with no platform fee and $10 in free credits to start, according to its pricing page. Every minute is the sum of four lines: $0.055 for Retell's voice infrastructure, a voice from $0.015, a language model from $0.0016, and a phone line at $0.015 a minute on a US number, or nothing from Retell if you bring your own SIP trunk. On the setup we would start most businesses on, that adds up to $0.149 a minute, so 1,000 inbound calls of three minutes cost $447 plus $2 for the number.

What Retell AI charges per minute
Retell publishes every component of the per-minute price on its rate card, and an independent eesel AI review of the same page, last edited October 5, lists the same $0.055 infrastructure fee and $0.015 voice rate. These four lines make up the minute you pay for:
- Voice infrastructure, $0.055 a minute. Retell's fee for its conversation voice engine. It is the same on every call, whatever model or voice you pick.
- Text to speech, $0.015 to $0.10 a minute. Retell's platform voices, Cartesia, Minimax, Fish, OpenAI and Inworld voices are $0.015. ElevenLabs costs more: $0.04 for Flash, $0.06 for Multilingual v2, $0.08 for v3 Conversational and v4 Turbo, and $0.10 for v3 and v4. ElevenLabs' own API rates are in our ElevenLabs v4 Turbo pricing explainer.
- The language model, $0.0016 to $0.32 a minute. Retell marks GPT 5.6 Terra and Claude 5 Sonnet as recommended at $0.064 a minute, GPT 5.4 at $0.08 and GPT 5.5 at $0.16. Small models cost a fraction of a cent: GPT 6 Luna and Claude 5.5 Haiku at $0.0032, GPT 5 nano at $0.0016. GPT 6 Astra is $0.32. A fast tier, offered on some models, doubles the rate, so GPT 6.1 Sol is $0.064 or $0.128.
- The phone line, up to $0.10 a minute in tier-1 markets. A US number on Retell's Twilio line is $0.015 a minute, US toll free $0.06, Canada $0.03, and the UK and Australia $0.10. Retell charges nothing for calls over your own SIP trunk or custom telephony, so you pay your carrier instead.
Speech-to-speech models sit on their own price line, from $0.07 a minute for GPT Realtime mini to $0.38 for GPT Realtime 2 and 2.1. Chat agents are billed per AI message instead, from $0.0005 on GPT 5 nano.
The add-ons and monthly fees on top
Features you switch on are priced per minute or per call. A knowledge base adds $0.005 a minute, advanced denoising $0.005, safety guardrails $0.005, PII removal $0.01, and AI quality assurance $0.10 a minute after the first 100 free minutes. Batch calling adds $0.005 a dial, branded caller ID $0.10 per outbound call, and SMS $0.01 a message.
The monthly items are small but recurring: $2 for each Retell phone number, $10 for a verified number, $20 for Retell SMS, $8 for each concurrent call above the 20 included, and $8 for each knowledge base above the 10 included. Numbers you connect through your own telephony carry no Retell number fee. Enterprise plans add custom pricing, dedicated support and concurrency from 50 calls up.
What a 1,000-call month costs
We priced two common jobs at Retell's list prices for US calls. The call lengths and pickup rates are our assumptions, so swap in your own numbers.
- Inbound receptionist, 1,000 calls of 3 minutes. 3,000 minutes at $0.149 (a Retell voice, GPT 5.6 Terra and a US Twilio line) is $447, plus $2 for the number: $449 a month. Add a knowledge base and the month is $464.
- Outbound appointment setting, 1,000 dials. If 350 people pick up and talk for 2 minutes and 300 calls reach voicemail for a 30-second message, Retell bills 850 minutes, or $126.65. Add $5 in batch dialing fees and $2 for the number and the month is about $134. Branded caller ID would add up to $100 more at $0.10 per outbound call.
- The same 3,000 inbound minutes on other builds. $219.60 on the leanest one (GPT 6 Luna and a Retell voice over your own SIP trunk, before your carrier's charges), $930 on GPT 5.5 with an ElevenLabs v4 Turbo voice, and $1,470 on GPT 6 Astra with an ElevenLabs v4 voice. That last build is $0.49 a minute, well above the $0.07 to $0.31 range Retell advertises.

Four billing rules that move the total
- Long prompts stretch the clock. Retell's billing exceptions page scales the billed duration once an agent uses more than 4,000 tokens: the factor is tokens divided by 4,000, so a 60-second call that uses 4,800 tokens bills as 72 seconds. The count includes the global prompt, tool descriptions, node prompts, the transcript, tool results and retrieved knowledge base text, and Retell names Flex mode as a common trigger.
- Short calls have a floor. A call under 10 seconds that opens with a dynamic message, with the AI speaking first, bills as 10 seconds. That adds up on outbound lists with many quick hang-ups.
- Burst capacity costs $0.10 a minute extra. With concurrency burst on, calls above your limit still connect, up to three times the limit or the limit plus 300, whichever is lower, but each burst call carries a $0.10 surcharge on every minute, per Retell's concurrency documentation. A permanent extra line is $8 a month, so a line that bursts for more than 80 minutes a month is cheaper to buy.
- Silence is billed, transfers mostly are not. Retell bills to the nearest second with no rounding per call, and it bills silence and hold time because the speech engine keeps listening. Failed calls are free, voicemail is billed only while the agent is on the line, and after a transfer only the telephony charge continues.
The September 30 switch to prepaid credits
Retell moved its remaining monthly-invoice workspaces to prepaid credits on September 30, 2026, while Enterprise workspaces stay on monthly invoices, according to its billing documentation. Calls, chat and other usage stop when the credit balance reaches zero. Credits never expire, but they are non-refundable. Auto recharge buys more when the balance drops below a trigger you set between $10 and $1,000, and an optional monthly budget between $10 and $100,000 pauses calls at 100 percent even if credits remain. Phone numbers, extra concurrency and extra knowledge bases still bill to your card at the end of the month.
What it means for operators
Retell's price is easy to read and easy to underestimate. The model is the biggest lever: moving from GPT 5.6 Terra to GPT 5.5 adds $0.096 a minute, more than Retell's own infrastructure fee. The voice is the second: an ElevenLabs v4 voice costs almost seven times a Retell voice. Most receptionist and booking flows run well on the recommended $0.064 models, so start there and upgrade only the call types that fail.
Three settings protect the budget. Keep the prompt and retrieved context under 4,000 tokens, or budget for the multiplier. Turn on auto recharge with a trigger above a busy day of usage, because an AI receptionist with no credits stops answering. And treat the monthly budget as a ceiling, not a target, since reaching it pauses calls until you raise it or the month resets.
For outbound, the consent rules matter more than the rate card, so read how we set up TCPA-compliant AI calling before a campaign dials a US number. For inbound, our AI calling setup for home-services businesses shows the build we run on this kind of stack, and our AI answering service for HVAC comparison prices it against packaged products. Practices that handle health information should start with our HIPAA-compliant AI receptionists comparison. If you want an agent built and priced for your own call volume, that is what our AI voice agent team does.
Frequently Asked Questions
Retell AI lists $0.07 to $0.31 a minute for voice agents on pay as you go. Each minute is $0.055 for voice infrastructure plus a voice ($0.015 for Retell's own, up to $0.10 for ElevenLabs v4), a model ($0.0016 to $0.32) and a phone line ($0.015 on a US Twilio number). A standard setup with GPT 5.6 Terra comes to $0.149 a minute.
There is no platform fee or minimum. Monthly charges apply only to extras: $2 per Retell phone number, $10 per verified number, $20 for Retell SMS, $8 per concurrent call above the 20 included and $8 per knowledge base above the 10 included. Usage is paid from prepaid credits, and new accounts get $10 free.
At list prices, 1,000 inbound calls of three minutes cost about $449 on a standard setup (GPT 5.6 Terra, a Retell voice, a US line and one number). 1,000 outbound dials where 350 people talk for two minutes and 300 calls reach voicemail cost about $134, plus up to $100 for branded caller ID.
Failed calls are free. Voicemail is billed only while the agent is on the line. Silence and hold time are billed because the speech engine keeps listening. After a transfer only the telephony charge continues, and a call under 10 seconds that starts with a dynamic AI opening bills as 10 seconds.
The usual causes are prompts over 4,000 tokens, which stretch the billed duration by tokens divided by 4,000; burst calls above your concurrency limit at $0.10 a minute extra; ElevenLabs voices; and add-ons such as a knowledge base, PII removal, batch dialing and branded calls.
Retell moved its remaining monthly-invoice workspaces to prepaid credits, while Enterprise stays on invoices. Credits never expire and are non-refundable, usage stops at a zero balance, auto recharge can top up from a trigger between $10 and $1,000, and a monthly budget between $10 and $100,000 pauses calls at 100 percent.
