Gemini Skills Replace Gems: Key Dates and the Workspace Delay

October 14, 2026. Google started rolling out skills in the Gemini app on October 13, with completion expected by mid-November, and the same day put the rollout of skills inside Workspace apps on hold until further notice. Skills replace Gems. For business and enterprise accounts, Gems stop working no sooner than March 1, 2027, and Workspace Studio flows that use an Ask a Gem step stop with them. You can already no longer create a Studio flow with an Ask a Gem step, so teams that automate Gmail and Drive work in Studio are between tools until the Workspace rollout resumes.

Dates read on 14 October 2026 from Google's Workspace Updates posts of 30 September and 13 October 2026 and the Workspace Studio help page.

What Google changed, and when

  1. September 30. Google introduced skills, reusable instructions for Gemini built on the Markdown-based SKILL.md standard, and said they will replace Gems. From then on, new Workspace Studio flows cannot use the Ask a Gem step. Existing flows keep working.
  2. October 5. Skills began rolling out inside Workspace. Rapid Release domains were due to finish by October 12, and Scheduled Release domains were due to start on October 19.
  3. October 13. Skills began rolling out in the Gemini app, and Google posted an update saying both Workspace rollouts are delayed until further notice, with a new timeline to follow.
  4. November 17. Gems move to the Settings panel of the Gemini app. You can still create, edit and use them there.
  5. No sooner than March 1, 2027. For business and enterprise accounts, Gems can no longer be created, edited or used, Ask a Gem steps stop working, and remaining Gems are auto-migrated to draft skills in the Gemini app. Education accounts follow no sooner than June 1, 2027. Android Central reports the same dates.

Who gets skills, and where

Skills in the Gemini app are available to all Google Workspace customers and to personal Google accounts, according to Google's post. Skills inside Workspace, which Google's Workspace Studio help page says you can create in Studio and use in flows and in the Gemini side panel of Gmail, Chat, Docs and Slides, are limited to Business Starter, Standard and Plus, Enterprise Starter, Standard and Plus, Google AI Pro for Education and the AI Expanded Access add-on, and to users over 18. The two do not sync: a skill made in the Gemini app has to be recreated in Workspace before you can use it there. Your Workspace admin also controls whether you can use skills at all.

What it means for teams that automate with Gems

  1. Do not plan new automations around Gems. A new Studio flow cannot use the Ask a Gem step, and the skill steps meant to replace it are part of the delayed Workspace rollout. Anything that has to ship this month needs another route.
  2. List what depends on Gems. Write down every Studio flow with an Ask a Gem step and every Gem your team relies on, with an owner for each. The business deadline is no sooner than March 1, 2027, and Google says admins will get details of the auto-migration at least 30 days in advance.
  3. Rewrite your Gems as skills in the Gemini app now. That is Google's own migration path, and it is the part that is rolling out. Because skills follow the SKILL.md format, Google says skills you built on other platforms can be copied into the Gemini app and Workspace.

If a flow answers customers or leads, it should not depend on a feature that is mid-migration. Our AI automation team builds those flows on tools with stable APIs, and an n8n developer can rebuild a Gmail flow outside Studio. If the flow sends from Gmail, the mailbox's reputation still decides whether replies land; that is what our email infrastructure service fixes.
