ChatGPT API Credits: Up to $500 a Month for Pro and Business

October 30, 2026. Since October 28, 2026, eligible ChatGPT Pro and Business subscribers can claim up to $500 a month in free OpenAI API credits by linking an API organization they own. Pro plans get $100, $200 or $500 a month by tier; Business workspaces get $20 per paid Standard seat and $100 per paid Premium seat, pooled and capped at $500 a month. Unused credits expire at the end of each billing cycle. In our view, for a small team already paying for ChatGPT Business, that is an API budget (monthly, or yearly if billed annually) that expires unless someone builds with it.

What OpenAI announced on October 28

  1. A new subscription benefit. The OpenAI API changelog for October 28 says eligible Pro and Business subscribers "can now claim up to $500 per month in free API credits as a subscription benefit", activated from ChatGPT or the API Platform.
  2. Fixed amounts by plan. OpenAI's developer guide, API credits for ChatGPT subscribers, lists $100, $200 and $500 a month for the three Pro tiers, and $20 per paid Standard seat and $100 per paid Premium seat for Business, "pooled and capped at $500 per workspace per month".
  3. Activate once, then each renewal. After activation, credits arrive automatically when the subscription renews, "while these benefits are available and your subscription is eligible". The first grant is prorated for the time left in the current billing cycle.
  4. No rollover. "Unused credits expire at the end of the billing cycle and don't roll over." Business workspaces that pay annually upfront get the full year's grant in one issuance, capped at $6,000.
  5. No API payment method needed. You can call the API on active free credits without adding an API payment method. Free credits are used before any purchased credits.

How much credit each plan gets

ChatGPT plan or seatMonthly API creditNotes (as listed on 30 October 2026)
Pro, $100 tier$100Tier name as OpenAI gives it
Pro, $200 tier$200Tier name as OpenAI gives it
Pro, $500 tier$500Tier name as OpenAI gives it
Business, Standard seat$20 per paid seatSeat costs $25 a month billed monthly, or $20 a month billed annually
Business, Premium seat$100 per paid seatSeat costs $125 a month billed monthly, or $100 a month billed annually
Business workspace cap$500 a month$6,000 per annual billing cycle if billed annually upfront; 2 seat minimum per workspace

Seat prices are from OpenAI's help article on managing billing and seats in ChatGPT Business. On our arithmetic, a Standard seat's $20 credit is 80% of its $25 monthly price and the same as its annual-plan monthly price, and the same holds for Premium ($100 of $125). The smallest Business allowance is $40 a month, two paid Standard seats at the 2 seat minimum, and a workspace reaches the $500 cap at 25 paid Standard seats or 5 paid Premium seats. OpenAI's own Help Center example for a monthly Business workspace: 5 Standard and 3 Premium seats contribute $400; 10 Standard and 4 Premium contribute $600 before the cap, so the workspace gets $500.

Who qualifies, and who does not

  • Plan and age. A paid Pro or Business subscription that has been active for at least 7 days. Plus, Go, Free, free trials and complimentary subscriptions do not qualify, and the guide says "ChatGPT Enterprise is not eligible for this benefit." The Help Center adds that "Enterprise, Edu and legacy Codex seats are not established eligible plans or seats for this offer."
  • Ownership on both sides. For Business, "the person activating must own both the ChatGPT workspace and the receiving API organization. Workspace membership or an admin role alone is not enough." The ChatGPT and API accounts must use the same email address.
  • One link each. One subscription or workspace links to one API organization, and an API organization can have only one such active link.
  • Not in every account. The Help Center says availability "also depends on the enabled cohort and country", so the benefit may not show in every account.

What the credits cover, and what they do not

The guide lists the Responses API, the Agents API (including OpenAI-hosted sandbox charges), the Decisions API, GPT-Live and the Realtime API for voice, the Images API, and built-in tools such as web search, file search and Code Interpreter. Two exclusions matter for teams: "Codex usage through API keys is not supported by this benefit", and the credits do not raise anyone's ChatGPT or signed-in Codex usage limits. The Help Center also says a ChatGPT seat "does not grant other workspace members API organization or project access", and that "a credit balance does not remove request-rate, token-rate, model, organization or project limits."

When the free balance runs out, purchased credits take over if you have any. If none remain, requests "fail with HTTP 429 and error code credit_balance_exhausted". OpenAI's fix is to add paid API credits or set up Auto Recharge. For an automation that customers depend on, we think that is the line to plan around.

What $20, $100 and $500 a month buy

Prices are from OpenAI's API pricing page (standard, short context, per million tokens, as listed on 30 October 2026). The task is hypothetical: one request with 3,000 input tokens and 300 output tokens, which in our estimate is about the size of an email personalization or a call summary. $20 is one Standard seat's share of a Business pool, not a whole plan.

ModelPrice in / outCost per taskTasks per $20Tasks per $100Tasks per $500
gpt-6-luna$0.10 / $0.50$0.00045about 44,400about 222,200about 1.1 million
gpt-6.1-terra$1.00 / $5.00$0.0045about 4,400about 22,200about 111,100
gpt-6.1-sol$2.00 / $10.00$0.009about 2,200about 11,100about 55,600

For voice, gpt-live-1 lists at $0.05 a minute, billed per second, and OpenAI says "backend model and tool usage is charged separately". On the session fee alone, $20 covers 400 minutes, $100 covers 2,000 and $500 covers 10,000. Our GPT-Live pricing breakdown has the full cost per call.

How it compares with Anthropic's Claude credits

Anthropic runs a similar program. Its page on API credits for subscribers gives $100 a month on Max 5x, $200 on Max 20x and up to $500 pooled on Team, at $20 per Standard seat and $100 per Premium seat, with no rollover and a seven-day wait for new subscribers. Claude Code is not covered, and Claude's Free, Pro and Enterprise plans are not eligible. We covered the details in Claude Max and Team API credits. The per-seat amounts and the $500 team ceiling match OpenAI's. In our view the credit is close to a wash between the two team plans, with two differences: OpenAI's top Pro tier gives $500 a month against $200 on Max 20x, and Anthropic refreshes annual plans monthly while OpenAI issues an annual Business grant all at once.

What it means for operators

In our view the practical change is that a Business workspace now comes with a claimable API budget that expires if unused. A hypothetical 10-person team on monthly Standard seats pays $250 a month and can claim $200 a month in API credit, which expires unused if nobody builds anything.

  1. Check ownership first. The workspace owner must also own the API organization and use the same email. Sort that out before anyone builds on a personal account.
  2. Link the organization your automations run in. Each subscription links to one API organization, so we would link the one that holds your production projects rather than a test sandbox.
  3. Decide what happens at zero. Without purchased credits, calls stop with a 429 error when the grant runs out. For a lead-routing flow or a voice agent that answers customers, we suggest adding paid credits, or Auto Recharge after reviewing its threshold and monthly purchase limit, as OpenAI advises.
  4. Spend inside the cycle. Monthly grants expire, so we think batch jobs such as lead enrichment or CRM clean-ups are a reasonable use of credit left late in the month.
  5. Do not price a client project on it. OpenAI says "the benefit may change or be removed in the future."
