How hashtags work on TikTok
Hashtags help TikTok understand what your video is about and connect it with people interested in that topic. They are one signal among many. TikTok also reads your caption, the text on screen, the words you say and how viewers respond. Think of hashtags as labels that should match the content, not as a shortcut to reach.
Skip the generic tags
Tags like #fyp, #foryou and #viral appear on huge numbers of videos and say nothing about yours. They do not tell TikTok who should see your video. Spend your caption space on tags that describe the actual topic and audience.
A better hashtag mix
- One broad tag for the category, such as #Fashion or #Cooking.
- One or two community tags where your audience gathers, such as #BookTok for readers or #SmallBusiness for owners.
- One or two specific tags for this exact video: the product, technique, location or question it answers.
Keywords matter as much as hashtags
Many people use TikTok like a search engine. Help your video show up for searches:
- Say the main keyword out loud in the first few seconds.
- Put it in the on-screen text.
- Write a caption that describes the video in plain words, not just hashtags.
Check before you post
- Search each hashtag in TikTok and look at the top videos. If they are unrelated, choose another tag.
- Avoid tags linked to misleading or unsafe content, even if they are popular.
- Only use a trending hashtag when your video really fits the trend.
How many to use
There is no magic number. A handful of accurate tags, usually three to five, keeps your caption readable and your topic clear. Use the list from this generator as a pool and pick the strongest few for each video.
