UPS and FedEx add their own per-package demand surcharges to residential ground parcels from October 25 and October 26, peaking at $0.75 and $0.80 in the weeks before Christmas, and Amazon's holiday peak fulfillment fees, averaging $0.32 a unit, start on October 15. FedEx has also set a 5.9 percent average list-rate increase for January 4, 2027. Here are the windows and fees from the carriers' own notices, and what a store should change before the next one starts.

The four holiday windows at a glance
- USPS, October 4 to January 17. The Postal Service filed the temporary prices on August 25 under Docket No. CP2026-10, according to its newsroom notice, and they cover Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, USPS Ground Advantage and Parcel Select, retail and commercial. No other product changes. Postal Explorer lists the time-limited price files as final, and Scripps News reported that USPS expects most customers to see single-digit to low double-digit percentage increases.
- UPS, September 27 to January 16. Demand surcharges on Additional Handling, Large Package and Over Maximum parcels started on September 27. Per-package surcharges on Ground Residential, Ground Saver and Air start on October 25, with the highest rates from November 22 to December 26, per the UPS demand surcharge notice dated August 26, 2026.
- FedEx, September 28 to January 17. Additional Handling, Oversize and Unauthorized surcharges began on September 28. Residential and air per-package surcharges start on October 26 and peak from November 23 to December 27, according to the FedEx demand surcharges page.
- Amazon, October 15 to January 14. Holiday peak fulfillment fees apply to Fulfillment by Amazon, Remote Fulfillment with FBA, Multi-Channel Fulfillment and Buy with Prime, with the same average increase as last year, $0.32 per unit, and the 3.5 percent fuel and logistics surcharge on top, Amazon said in its Holiday 2026 seller notice.
What USPS adds per package
Stores that buy labels through shipping software pay commercial prices, so those are the numbers that hit margins. For Priority Mail and Ground Advantage in zones 1 to 4, USPS adds $0.40 for 0 to 3 pounds, $0.65 for 4 to 10 pounds, $1.05 for 11 to 25 pounds and $3.15 for 26 to 70 pounds and oversized parcels. Ground Advantage in zones 5 to 9 adds $0.55, $1.05, $1.75 and $7.70 across the same weight bands. Priority Mail in zones 5 to 9 adds $0.85, $1.75, $3.85 and $9.10. A Large Flat Rate Box costs $1.75 more and every other flat rate product $0.85 more. Parcel Select adds $0.40 to $2.35 by weight.
Counter prices rise more. A retail Ground Advantage or Priority Mail parcel of up to 3 pounds in zones 1 to 4 costs $0.50 more, and the heaviest retail Priority Mail Express parcels in zones 5 to 9 cost $20.80 more. If your team still drops off parcels at the counter for one-off orders, this is the season to move them onto commercial labels.
What UPS and FedEx add, week by week
UPS charges $0.50 per Ground Residential and Ground Saver package from October 25 to November 21, $0.75 from November 22 to December 26 and $0.50 again from December 27 to January 16. Next Day Air and other Air services carry $1.35, then $2.50, then $1.35. Additional Handling runs $8.75 per package from September 27 and $11.90 in the peak weeks, Large Package $96.25 and $117.50, and Over Maximum Limits $530 and $590. Shippers billed for more than 20,000 packages in any week since October 2025 move to Higher Volume Shipper tables, where a Ground Residential package carries up to $8.00 from October 25 to November 21 when weekly volume runs above 400 percent of its baseline. Supply Chain Dive's summary of the schedule matches these figures.
FedEx charges $0.50 per Ground Residential and Home Delivery residential package from October 26 to November 22, $0.80 from November 23 to December 27 and $0.50 from December 28 to January 17. Overnight services carry $1.30 and $2.55, 2Day and Express Saver $1.20 and $2.35, and the contract-only Ground Economy $2.55 and $4.05. Additional Handling is $8.80 from September 28 and $11.85 at peak, Oversize $95.75 and $117.25. Enterprise customers shipping more than 20,000 residential and Ground Economy packages a week pay a dynamic charge of $1.70 to $8.00 per Ground or Home Delivery package in weeks when their volume runs above 105 percent of a June 2026 baseline.

A light parcel in the peak weeks
Take a parcel of up to 3 pounds going to a home between November 23 and December 26. Ground Advantage adds $0.40 in zones 1 to 4 or $0.55 in zones 5 to 9, UPS Ground Residential adds $0.75, FedEx Home Delivery adds $0.80 and Priority Mail in zones 5 to 9 adds $0.85. On 1,000 such orders that is $400 to $550 more on Ground Advantage, $750 on UPS and $800 on FedEx for those weeks alone.
The windows matter as much as the amounts. USPS charges its add-on for the whole season, from October 4 to January 17, while UPS and FedEx add no holiday surcharge to a light residential parcel before October 25 and October 26 and only $0.50 outside their peak weeks. So in October the Postal Service is the only one of the three adding a holiday surcharge to a standard home parcel, and in the five weeks before Christmas Ground Advantage adds the least of the services above. None of this replaces comparing the full label price: a surcharge is added to base rates that already differ by carrier, zone and weight.
Amazon sellers: the fee and the deadlines
Amazon's peak fees apply from October 15 to January 14, and they reach beyond Amazon orders: Multi-Channel Fulfillment and Buy with Prime orders from your own store pay them too. Amazon's inbound deadlines for Black Friday Week and Cyber Monday are October 14 for Amazon Warehousing and Distribution shipments, October 21 for FBA shipments with minimal shipment splits and October 28 for FBA shipments with Amazon-optimized splits, which most sellers use.
January brings the next increase
FedEx standard list rates for US, US export and US import services rise an average of 5.9 percent on January 4, 2027, with changes to surcharges and fees the same day, according to its rate changes page. A $25 paper document fee and a $5 paper air waybill fee follow on January 18, and zone assignments for some ZIP code pairs change on February 1. Supply Chain Dive reported the same 5.9 percent figure. The UPS notice covers surcharges through January 16, so check its 2027 rate notice before you set January shipping prices.
What it means for operators
If your checkout charges flat shipping rates, every surcharge above comes out of your margin until January. Carrier-calculated rates can pass it to the shopper if your rate source includes the surcharges, but a free-shipping threshold set in the summer now covers a costlier label, so recheck it against your December parcel mix. Three changes are worth making this season:
- Rate-shop by window, not by habit. In October, USPS is the only one of the three adding a holiday surcharge to light home parcels. From late October, compare full label prices per zone, because the cheapest add-on is not always the cheapest label.
- Stay out of Additional Handling. At $11.90 with UPS and $11.85 with FedEx in the peak weeks, one oversized carton can erase the margin on a low-priced order. Check the dimensions of your largest boxes against each carrier's Additional Handling rules before you reorder packaging.
- Price Amazon Multi-Channel Fulfillment orders with the peak fee. If your own store ships through MCF, add the average $0.32 per unit and the 3.5 percent surcharge to your holiday shipping prices.
Apps that pull live rates from the carriers can pass these surcharges through. Apps that store a static rate table cannot, and merchants tend to notice the gap in their margins first and then in their reviews for apps in the Shopify App Store. If you would rather not rebuild shipping rules by hand, a Shopify expert can set rates per market, and our AI automation team builds rate-shopping rules that pick the cheapest label per order.
