October 16, 2026. Google began rolling Gmail's AI Inbox out to paid Google Workspace users on October 15, according to its Workspace Updates post. AI Inbox turns incoming mail into suggested to-dos and short topic summaries, and Gmail's Help Center says it only draws on messages in the Primary tab, never Social or Promotions. It is limited to US users with English (US) as their language, and Workspace admins have no control to switch it off. If you sell by email to US companies on Google Workspace, a message that lands in Promotions cannot become a to-do in your prospect's AI Inbox.

What Google rolled out on October 15
- Two sections. Suggested to-dos pulls action items, deliverables and deadlines out of email conversations, and the Help Center says it shows what you need to do in bold, such as a due date. Topics to catch up on summarizes important updates across multi-message threads.
- Paid editions first. The post lists Business Starter, Standard and Plus, Enterprise Starter, Standard and Plus, AI Pro for Education and Frontline Plus, then adds that Starter and Education editions get it later, in the coming months. Our reading: Standard and Plus editions get it first.
- Rollout dates. Rapid Release domains started a gradual rollout on October 12, and Scheduled Release domains start on October 26. Each can take up to 15 days to see it.
- No admin switch. Users open AI Inbox from the Gmail menu on desktop or mobile. It needs Gmail's smart features turned on and can take up to 7 days to show the first to-dos.
- What it skips. Spam and mail that is archived, deleted, muted or snoozed are filtered out, and attachments, delegated inboxes and encrypted email are not supported.
AI Inbox first appeared for consumer Gmail in January 2026. TechRadar reported in May that it decides what to prioritize from data such as the people you email most, and that it was then in preview for Workspace Enterprise Plus customers.
What it means for cold email
- Tab placement decides more. A cold email in Promotions was already easy to miss. It is now also absent from the view that some buyers will open first.
- A first email starts with no history. A ranking built on the people a buyer emails most gives a stranger nothing to work with. A reply in the same thread is what builds that history.
- The ask has to be in the body. To-dos come from action items and deadlines inside the message, and attachments are not supported, so an offer buried in a PDF gives AI Inbox nothing to surface.
- The rest of your list is unchanged for now. Prospects outside the US, or set to another language, will not see AI Inbox yet.
What to change this month
- Test tab placement on Workspace. Seed a few Google Workspace inboxes set to US English and check which tab a campaign lands in before you scale it.
- Write one ask with a date. A 15-minute call on Tuesday or Wednesday is an action with a deadline, the kind of item AI Inbox extracts. Asking whether they are interested is neither.
- Keep follow-ups in one thread. Topics summarize back-and-forth across a thread, so one thread per prospect keeps your history together.
- Judge campaigns on replies. AI Inbox changes what a buyer reads first, not whether your email was delivered, so reply rate stays the number to watch.
Reaching the inbox at all comes first, and that depends on domains, authentication and warm-up, the email infrastructure we set up for clients. Frequently Asked Questions
Google's October 15 post lists Business Starter, Standard and Plus, Enterprise Starter, Standard and Plus, AI Pro for Education and Frontline Plus, and says Starter and Education editions get it later in the coming months. It is only for US users with English (US) as their language. Rapid Release domains started on October 12 and Scheduled Release domains start on October 26, with up to 15 days each.
Google says there is no admin control for the feature. AI Inbox needs Gmail's smart features turned on, so a user who keeps them off does not get it.
No. Gmail's Help Center says AI Inbox only surfaces information from messages in the Primary tab, not Social or Promotions, and filters out spam and mail you archive, delete, mute or snooze.
Not directly. Google describes AI Inbox as a view built from mail already in the Primary tab, and nothing in its post or help article changes spam filtering or tab placement. It changes what a buyer sees first: a cold email in Promotions or spam never appears in it.
