AppSumo Credits Explained: Do They Expire and What Are They Worth?

Affiliate disclosure: some links in this article are partner links. If you start a paid plan through them, imisofts may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. We only recommend tools we actually use to run client campaigns.

Short answer: "AppSumo credits" is two different things, and only one has a published, marketplace-wide rule. The store currency in your AppSumo account is pegged at 1 credit to 1 US dollar, AppSumo's help centre says it never expires, and it can never be turned back into money. The credits inside the tools you buy are a separate meter set by each partner, and those routinely do expire. Know which one you are holding before you spend either.

Browse current AppSumo deals and you will see credit allowances on most AI listings.

Two different things are called AppSumo credits

The first is marketplace currency. It lives on the "Credits and gift cards" page of your account, it is what the shutdown guarantee pays out in, and it is what an old AppSumo gift card converts into. AppSumo publishes its rules, in the help centre and the Terms of Use. The second is a usage meter inside a product. When a listing offers "10,000 credits a month" or a "one time credit bank", those are the partner's units, and there is no marketplace-wide rule for them. The only rules we found were partner replies in the question threads on individual deal pages, and they differ by deal.

What the store currency is actually worth

AppSumo's help centre states the rate plainly: "The AppSumo credits exchange rate is 1 ASC = 1 USD." On expiry it says "the best part is, they never expire!" That is better than most store credit and worth saying before the caveats, all of which AppSumo also publishes:

  • Not cash, ever. The help centre: credits are "not redeemable for cash value." The Terms of Use: "AppSumo Credits may not be returned or redeemed for cash."
  • Not transferable. They "cannot be shared, sent to another person or transferred between accounts."
  • Not usable on everything. Physical items such as conference tickets and books are cash only.
  • You do not control how they apply. On a partial balance, "customers are unable to choose how AppSumo credits are distributed throughout their transaction."

So a credit is a dollar that can only ever buy more software on one marketplace, and that is what the shutdown guarantee does not price. When AppSumo's membership page promises "Plus members get 100% back in credits" if a Select tool closes, the recovery is real, and it is also a voucher to re-enter the market that just cost you money.

What the Terms of Use say, and do not say

We read the Terms of Use in full on 18 September 2026. It is marked "Last Modified: February 11, 2025" and runs to roughly 28,900 characters. Three measurements, case insensitive on the rendered text so you can repeat them:

  • "expire" appears zero times. So does "forfeit".
  • "credit" appears five times, and all five sit inside one short clause, section 2C, "AppSumo Credits".
  • Section 10, Termination, says that if an account is terminated or suspended "you may lose access to your account information and Your Content." It does not mention a credit balance.

Silence cuts both ways. The Terms not using "expire" also means AppSumo has reserved no right to expire your credits, which favours the buyer. The honest statement is that the never-expires promise lives in a help article rather than the contract, and the contract is quiet about a balance if an account goes away. That matters here because AppSumo does reserve the right to "limit, suspend, or terminate your account" over refund behaviour, determining "in our sole discretion" what counts as excessive. Its own description of the consequence is milder than the clause: a separate help article says "in rare cases, accounts with significantly elevated refund activity may lose access to future refunds, and purchases may be considered final sale." No closure, no mention of credits. We report both, because quoting only the contract would overstate the risk.

Taking a refund in credits is a one way door

This is the most decision-changing thing we found, and it sits in the Refund FAQ rather than the Refund Policy, which does not contain the phrase "AppSumo credit" at all. The FAQ says: "For some purchases, you may see the option to refund your payment in AppSumo credits (our exchange rate is 1 ASC = 1 USD). However, not all purchases are eligible." A few lines later: "once a refund is processed, the refund payment cannot be changed from the original form of payment that was selected during your refund."

So at the moment you are least patient, cancelling a tool that did not work out, you may be offered two options that look identical because both are denominated one to one. One returns money to your card. The other returns spendable-only-here currency, and once processed you cannot switch. Refunding to buy something else this month, credits are fine. Refunding because the stack was a mistake, take the money.

Check the refund window printed on any AppSumo listing before you buy, because it is set per deal rather than site wide.

In product credits: three rules, one account

Across three official question threads on AppSumo deal pages, each answered by an account carrying AppSumo's "Founder Team" badge, three distinct behaviours appear. These are not vendors contradicting each other. They are three kinds of credit that can sit in one account at once.

  • One time bonus credits included with the deal. NextDocs, 13 June 2026: "The one-time AppSumo bonus credits included with your deal do not expire. They sit on top of your monthly credits and are used after your monthly credits." Merlio, 13 May 2026, says its "one-time credit bank (250,000 credits on Tier 3)" also "never expires and stays on your account permanently."
  • Monthly refill credits. Merlio: "Monthly credits refresh each cycle and don't roll over (like most subscription models)." This is the normal behaviour, and the one most buyers assume applies to everything.
  • Purchased top up packs. NextDocs warns that "purchased top-up packs are separate from the AppSumo bonus credits and may have their own expiry terms."

A tier headline like "10,000 credits" tells you almost nothing until you know its bucket. A one time bank is an asset, a monthly refill is a rate limit, a purchased pack may be a clock.

The Mootion case, and where the expiry was published

In March 2026 a Plus member posted on the Mootion listing. He had bought a Tier 3 licence and a 10,000 credit pack: "The Appsumo sales page didn't mention an expiration date for the credit pack. After activation, I received the message, 'All purchased credits in credit package will keep valid for up to two billing cycles.'" The Founder Team account confirmed it two days later: the pack is "valid 1 - 2 billing cycles", meaning the credits "will expire after 1-2 months (starting from the date you purchased them) if you haven't used up." That month reading is the partner's own gloss on "billing cycles".

We read that deal page ourselves on 18 September 2026, using the full page text rather than only the visible part, because collapsed panels hide content from a naive read. "expir" appears five times: four in one buyer review rendered twice in the source, and one status field marking the deal itself expired, since it ran 7 June to 5 July 2026 at 79 dollars against a 144 dollar list. The deal terms panel describes the add on as "Credit Packs (non-refundable, one-time use)" and states no expiry. So the rule reaches buyers through a question thread and a review, not the deal terms. We did not read the page as it looked in March, so we report the exchange and our own measurement, nothing more.

Plus coupons are not credits, and the gap costs money

A third instrument gets mixed into the same conversation. Plus Annual and Plus Pro Annual members receive a 25 dollar coupon every 90 days, four a year, totalled by AppSumo as "$100 in savings". Plus Monthly members do not get them. Coupons are not credits: single use, never re-issued after a refund, and per the Plus coupon article there is no minimum spend, "meaning that if the entire coupon is not used, it will not be refunded back to your account." Spend a 25 dollar coupon on a 19 dollar deal and 6 dollars is gone.

The bigger number is a combination rule. The help centre says Plus coupons "cannot be combined with other coupons or site wide promotions like Sumo Day, Black Friday, etc." The page selling Plus runs a calculator that, at its default 1,350 dollars of annual spend, shows 135 dollars of deal discount, 100 dollars of coupons, 99 dollars of membership cost and a net of plus 136, under the line "The $25 coupons alone cover the membership fee."

That is true by exactly one dollar, 100 against 99, and only if all four coupons are issued, fully spent, and spent outside every site wide sale. Strip the coupon line, the worst case for someone who buys during Sumo Day and Black Friday, and the same arithmetic gives 135 minus 99, a net of plus 36. The membership still pays for itself on the 10 percent discount alone above roughly 990 dollars of annual spend, so the claim that breaks is not "well past breakeven", it is "the coupons alone cover the fee".

Where AppSumo gets this right

Credits that never expire and sit one to one with the dollar are better terms than most store credit, and AppSumo publishes the rate rather than inventing a points system. Its stacking arithmetic is also correct: the help centre says a 10 percent site wide promotion plus the Plus 10 percent gives "a total of 19% off", which is exact, since one minus 0.9 times 0.9 is 0.19. One measurement without an accusation attached: on the Plus page, roughly 13,000 characters of text, "coupon" appears 23 times and "credit" once, in the sentence describing the guarantee. It is disclosed, in the only sentence where credits are relevant.

How to check before you buy

  • Name the bucket. For any tier quoted in credits, establish whether they are one time, monthly refill, or a purchased pack. If the listing does not say, ask in the question thread, where the answer becomes public and dated.
  • Read the deal terms panel, not the marketing copy. Refund window, activation deadline and add on conditions live there, often collapsed.
  • Decide your refund currency in advance. If you want money rather than store credit, do not pick credits at the refund screen.
  • Treat guarantee credits as a discount on your next purchase, not insurance. They are worth what you would have spent here anyway.

Frequently Asked Questions

AppSumo's help centre says the marketplace credits in your account never expire, and its Terms of Use, last modified 11 February 2025, do not use the word expire at all in either direction. That is only true of the store currency. The credits inside a product you buy are the partner's own meter and often do expire, so check the deal terms and the question thread on that listing.

AppSumo publishes the rate as 1 ASC equals 1 USD, so a credit buys a dollar of software on AppSumo. It is not a dollar in every sense: the help centre says credits are not redeemable for cash value and the Terms of Use say they may not be returned or redeemed for cash. They also cannot be transferred between accounts, and they do not apply to physical items such as conference tickets or books.

Sometimes. AppSumo's Refund FAQ says that for some purchases you may see the option to refund your payment in AppSumo credits at one to one, but not all purchases are eligible. Decide before you click, because the same FAQ says that once a refund is processed, the refund payment cannot be changed from the form of payment selected during the refund.

No, and this is the most common mix up. Marketplace credits are AppSumo's store currency. Credits quoted in a deal's tiers are the partner's usage meter. Across three official question threads answered by Founder Team accounts, we found three different behaviours: one time bonus credits that do not expire, monthly refill credits that do not roll over, and purchased top up packs that can expire in one to two billing cycles.

No. Plus Annual and Plus Pro Annual members get a 25 dollar coupon every 90 days, four a year, totalling 100 dollars. Plus Monthly members do not get them. Coupons are single use, are never re-issued after a refund, and have no minimum spend, which means any unused portion of a coupon is not returned to your account. They stack with the Plus 10 percent discount but cannot be combined with site wide promotions such as Sumo Day or Black Friday.

Not on the credits alone. On AppSumo's own savings calculator, 1,350 dollars of annual spend gives 135 dollars of discount plus 100 dollars of coupons against a 99 dollar fee, a net of plus 136. Remove the coupon line, which is what happens if you buy during site wide sales, and the same arithmetic gives plus 36. The 10 percent discount alone covers the fee above roughly 990 dollars of annual spend, so treat the shutdown credits as a discount on your next purchase rather than as insurance.
