Quick Answer: It depends on what you pull. For email lists, Apollo is far cheaper per contact: a Basic seat is $49 a month billed annually for 30,000 credits a year, about 2 cents a verified email, against 27 cents per export on RocketReach Essentials and 8.5 cents on Ultimate. RocketReach has the cheapest paid seat (email-only Essentials at $27 a month billed annually), claims the bigger database (700 million professionals against Apollo's 240M+ contacts), does not meter lookups inside the app on annual plans, and at Ultimate volume undercuts Apollo on contacts that include a phone number. In our tests Apollo won on email accuracy and speed, and RocketReach on phone data. For pure email finding at scale, Apollo. For phone-heavy prospecting where reps work numbers inside the app, RocketReach.

Corrected on 29 September 2026: we re-checked every price, plan limit, database count, founding date and security certification on this page against Apollo's pricing, product, security and about pages and RocketReach's pricing page, help center, security post and anniversary press release. Earlier versions quoted plans neither company publishes, including a $65 five-user Apollo plan and a $2,450 flat Enterprise cap, put Apollo's database at 260M+ (Apollo states 240M+) and RocketReach's at 215M (it claims 700 million professionals), called Apollo the newer company (both date from 2015), and said RocketReach lacked bulk export and refreshed weekly; those errors flattered Apollo. We also removed an unsupported claim about RocketReach search windows. The accuracy, speed and campaign figures below come from the original article and were not re-tested.

The Core Difference

Both companies date from 2015: Apollo's about page says it was founded in 2015, and RocketReach's 10-year anniversary release (June 2025) says it began as a bootstrapped startup in 2015. RocketReach optimized for phone numbers. Apollo optimized for speed and exportable volume per seat. In cold email ops, speed and email accuracy matter more than phone verification.

We tested both on 2,000 tech executives across the US. Apollo found emails in 4 seconds per contact. RocketReach took 11 seconds. Both found the same 87% of targets. But Apollo's speed meant we could iterate lists 3x faster for our 25-domain infrastructure rotation.

Email Finding Speed: Apollo Crushes It

Email finding latency kills cold email operations.

Apollo's speed:

  • Real-time finder: 2-4 seconds per contact
  • Bulk list processing: 50-200 contacts/minute
  • Data freshness: 2M+ users help keep the data fresh every day (Apollo's description)

RocketReach's speed:

  • Standard search: 8-12 seconds per contact
  • Bulk processing: 20-50 contacts/minute
  • Verification: on demand and in real time (RocketReach's description)

This sounds like a small difference. It's not. When you're processing 5,000 prospects weekly for a 25-domain infrastructure, Apollo's speed saves 8-12 hours of processing time. That compounds into 400-600 hours yearly, basically a full-time employee worth of waiting gone.

Our AI inventory startup tested both. They built a Loom video follow-up workflow. Apollo allowed them to generate, verify, and send follow-ups the same day. RocketReach's 11-second latency broke their workflow, videos had to batch next-day because they couldn't find emails fast enough. They switched to Apollo exclusively.

Email Accuracy: Apollo's 91% vs RocketReach's 88%

Both vendors claim 98% on their own pages: Apollo for email accuracy, RocketReach for its on-demand verification. Our testing showed Apollo's cleaner.

Verified bounce rate testing (10,000 test emails each):

Apollo: 9% bounce rate on first send. 4% hard bounces (invalid addresses). 5% soft bounces (inbox full, server issues).

RocketReach: 12% bounce rate on first send. 7% hard bounces. 5% soft bounces.

For cold email infrastructure on private servers, that 3% gap is significant. Hard bounces tank your sender reputation faster than soft bounces. RocketReach's 7% hard bounce rate on fresh data is problematic. Apollo's 4% is acceptable for outbound ops.

Real campaign result:

AlwaysConvert.ai needed 175 inboxes across 25 domains. They tested Apollo data in 15 domains, RocketReach data in 10. After 500 cold emails per domain:

  • Apollo infrastructure: 71% inbox placement, 2.1% reply rate
  • RocketReach infrastructure: 64% inbox placement, 1.7% reply rate

That's 7 percentage points of deliverability lost to lower-quality email data. Multiplied across 175 inboxes, that's ~12,250 emails landing in spam instead of inbox per campaign. At 2% reply rate, that's 245 lost replies per campaign.

Phone Number Data: RocketReach Wins Decisively

RocketReach is built for sales teams doing multi-channel outreach. In our tests its phone numbers verified at 84% against Apollo's 60%.

For cold email only? Phone numbers are nice-to-have. For teams doing email-to-phone follow-up sequences, RocketReach's data quality matters.

Real scenario:

Sales team working 50 accounts with email open but no reply. They follow up by phone. RocketReach's numbers worked 78% of the time (reached actual person). Apollo's numbers worked 51% of the time. That's a 27-point gap for phone outreach.

But here's the catch: how often does a cold email team need phone follow-up? Most don't. Cold email works because it's asynchronous. Phone follow-up requires sales development rep time, expensive and unscalable. If you're running 1,000-prospect campaigns weekly on private server infrastructure, phone follow-up doesn't fit the playbook.

Pricing: Seat Price vs Cost per Contact

Apollo sells per seat. Billed annually, Basic is $49 a seat a month ($588 a year) with 30,000 credits a seat a year, Professional is $79 ($948) with 48,000, and Organization is $119 ($1,428) with 72,000 and a three-seat minimum. Month to month, Basic is $65 for 2,500 credits a month and Professional $99 for 4,000; Organization is sold annually only. An email costs 1 credit and a phone number 8, credits expire at the end of each billing cycle, and Apollo caps how many records you can select at once: 25 on Free, 1,000 on Basic, 2,500 on Professional and 10,000 on Organization.

RocketReach also sells per seat. Billed annually, Essentials (email only) is $27 a month ($329 a year) with 1,200 exports a year, Pro (email and phone) is $69 ($829) with 3,600, and Ultimate (email and phone) is $142 ($1,699) with 20,000. Month to month the same plans are $49, $99 and $209 with 100, 250 and 1,000 exports a month. Annual plans do not meter lookups inside the app (RocketReach's help center sets a fair-use cap of 10,000 lookups a month), but every contact that leaves it, by CSV, CRM sync, API or MCP, uses an export credit, and more exports mean a bigger plan.

At 10 users, billed annually:

  • Apollo Basic: $5,880 a year; Professional: $9,480
  • RocketReach Essentials: $3,130 a year; Pro: $7,880 (its team pricing takes about 5 percent off each seat)

At 50 users:

  • Apollo: no flat cap is published. Basic at 50 seats is $29,400 a year, and Apollo points large teams to custom plans
  • RocketReach: custom team plans "start at $6K annually", with pooled credits and higher API limits

One condition matters for agencies: Apollo's pricing page says the plans shown are "permitted for internal business use only", and that using them to power external products, share data with customers or resell Apollo data "is not allowed under our standard terms" and needs a separate agreement. Check that before you build client lists on a standard seat.

So the cheapest paid seat on either price list is RocketReach Essentials, which is email only. For seats that include phone numbers, Apollo Basic ($588 a year) undercuts RocketReach Pro ($829), and it still does at 5 seats ($2,940 against $3,940) and 10 seats ($5,880 against $7,880). For email lists the answer turns on volume, because RocketReach sells exports in tiers. Up to 1,200 exported emails a year, Essentials is the cheaper subscription by $259. From 1,201 to 3,600 you need Pro, and Apollo Basic is $241 cheaper; from 3,601 to 20,000 you need Ultimate, and Apollo Basic is $1,111 cheaper; above 20,000, RocketReach moves you to custom team plans while one Basic seat still carries 30,000 credits. Prices read on 29 September 2026 on apollo.io/pricing, rocketreach.co/pricing and RocketReach's help center.

Cost-per-email-verified:

Apollo: $588 a year ÷ 30,000 credits = about 2 cents per verified email on Basic, billed annually, or 2.6 cents on monthly billing. Apollo charges credits only for emails it can verify.

RocketReach: $329 a year ÷ 1,200 exports = about 27 cents per exported contact on Essentials, 23 cents on Pro and 8.5 cents on Ultimate. RocketReach refunds a lookup that finds nothing verified; its pricing page does not say the same for exports.

For email-only lists, Apollo is about 14x cheaper than an Essentials export and about 4x cheaper than an Ultimate export. Add the phone number and the order can flip: an Apollo contact with email and phone costs 9 credits, about 17.6 cents, which beats RocketReach Pro (about 23 cents an export, email and phone included) but loses to Ultimate (about 8.5 cents) if you use all 20,000 exports. And a rep on an annual Pro or Ultimate plan who looks numbers up inside RocketReach and dials them does not spend exports at all.

Database Quality: Both Strong, Different Focus

Apollo's database (240M+ contacts and 30M+ companies by Apollo's count) includes:

  • US tech/startup ecosystem (densest)
  • European mid-market (good)
  • APAC emerging (growing)
  • Job-level accuracy: 87%
  • Company size detection: 92%

RocketReach's database (700 million professionals and 60 million companies by RocketReach's count) includes:

  • US enterprise (strongest)
  • Multi-country coverage (good)
  • Decision-maker focus (verified C-level)
  • Phone number pairing: 84%
  • Industry categorization: 94%

For prospecting startup CTOs and founders? Apollo. For reaching verified enterprise CFOs with mobile and direct phone numbers? RocketReach.

Our European CFO firm chose Apollo for startup/scale-up reach. RocketReach couldn't match the mid-market SMB data in Germany and Netherlands. The databases optimize for different end markets.

Feature Parity: Where They Separate

Apollo wins:

  • Real-time finder speed (2-4 sec in our tests)
  • API flexibility (custom integrations)
  • Volume per seat for list building (30,000 credits a year on Basic)
  • A usable free plan (75 credits a month against 3 free lookups)
  • Cost per email (about 2 cents on Basic)

RocketReach wins:

  • Phone number verification (84% vs 60% in our tests)
  • Cheapest paid seat ($27 a month on email-only Essentials, billed annually)
  • Decision-maker title accuracy
  • Unlimited in-app lookups on annual plans (10,000 a month fair use)
  • Customer support tier (included)

For pure email infrastructure, Apollo's API and export capabilities matter more. Security certification is not a tiebreaker: both vendors state SOC 2 and ISO 27001 certification. RocketReach's edge is phone work inside the app, where annual plans do not meter lookups.

Real Campaign Results: Numbers Don't Lie

We ran identical 5,000-prospect campaigns across Apollo and RocketReach data using the same 25-domain private server infrastructure.

Apollo campaign:

  • Email coverage: 87% (4,350 emails sent)
  • Bounce rate: 9%
  • Inbox placement: 71%
  • Opens: 52%

RocketReach campaign:

  • Email coverage: 84% (4,200 emails sent)
  • Bounce rate: 12%
  • Inbox placement: 64%
  • Opens: 48%

Apollo: 91 verified conversations from 5,000 prospects (1.82%).

RocketReach: 71 verified conversations from 5,000 prospects (1.42%).

20 additional qualified conversations from Apollo. That's a 26% efficiency gain on reply rate.

Verdict: Apollo for Cold Email, RocketReach for Multi-Channel

Choose Apollo if:

  • Email finding speed matters (weekly campaigns)
  • You export thousands of contacts a month into your own sending infrastructure
  • Cost per email is the primary concern
  • Each seat needs more than 100 exported contacts a month
  • Cold email is 70%+ of outreach

Choose RocketReach if:

  • Phone follow-up is part of strategy
  • Enterprise decision-makers are target
  • Reps look up and dial numbers inside the app rather than exporting lists
  • You want the cheapest paid email-only seat and need fewer than 100 exports a month
  • Multi-channel (email + phone + LinkedIn) outreach is plan

Our Recommendation

For cold email ops at imisofts, Apollo wins decisively. Email finding speed, email accuracy, and cost per email align with how we operate 25-domain infrastructure and manage 175 inboxes for clients.

RocketReach makes sense for traditional enterprise sales teams where phone follow-up converts better than cold email persistence. That's a different playbook.

If you're hiring SDRs for email-to-phone sequences? RocketReach's phone number quality justifies its cost. If you're scaling cold email campaigns across private servers? Apollo, no question.

Frequently Asked Questions

In our tests Apollo was 91-93% accurate and RocketReach 88-91%, with first-send bounce rates of 9% and 12%. Both vendors claim 98% on their own pages. Apollo wins for cold email. RocketReach wins for phone data.
In our tests Apollo returned an email in 2 to 4 seconds against 8 to 12 for RocketReach. Neither pricing page gives a lookup time in seconds, both companies date from 2015, and RocketReach says it verifies contacts on demand and in real time, so treat the gap as our measurement, not a spec.
Yes. Above 1,200 exported contacts a year Apollo is better value; below that, RocketReach Essentials is the cheaper subscription. In our tests the RocketReach data bounced at 12% on first send and processed more slowly, and every contact you move into a sending tool uses an export credit: 1,200 a year on Essentials, 3,600 on Pro. RocketReach is optimized for sales teams doing email + phone follow-up.
Neither publishes a flat-rate plan. Billed annually, 10 seats cost $5,880 a year on Apollo Basic, $3,130 on RocketReach Essentials (email only) and $7,880 on RocketReach Pro (email and phone). Per contact, Apollo is cheaper for email lists, about 2 cents an email against 8.5 to 27 cents per RocketReach export; with phone numbers included, RocketReach Ultimate (about 8.5 cents an export) undercuts Apollo (about 17.6 cents for email plus phone).
Apollo, in our experience the more flexible API for private infrastructure. RocketReach has an API and bulk export too, but every contact retrieved through the API or exported uses an export credit, capped at 1,200, 3,600 or 20,000 a year on its annual plans, which is tight for a 25-domain rotation.
