Agentic Commerce Reality Check: Why ChatGPT Scaled Back In Chat Checkout, and What Merchants Should Do

What happened

  1. OpenAI pulled back its in chat checkout. Instant Checkout launched in September 2025 and was scaled back in March 2026, about five months later, after fewer than fifteen of Shopify's millions of merchants ever went live.
  2. The operational reality was brutal. Buying inside the chat ran into inaccurate product display, no multi item carts, no loyalty, and the genuinely hard problems of tax, fraud and fulfillment. Shoppers saw little advantage over Amazon or a normal store checkout.
  3. OpenAI did not quit, it pivoted. The replacement is discovery first.
