What is a Google AI Overview?
An AI Overview is the AI-generated summary Google shows at the top of some search results. It answers the search in a few short paragraphs or a list, and links to the web pages it uses as sources. Because it sits above the organic results, the sources it cites get some of the most visible links on the page.
How to check if your site is cited in an AI Overview
Enter a keyword, add your domain, and pick a country and a device. The tracker loads the live Google results and shows you:
- whether Google shows an AI Overview for that search right now
- the text of the AI Overview and the list of sources it cites
- whether your domain is cited, and as which source number
- your organic position, if you rank in the top 10
- the top 10 organic results for the same search
The domain is optional. Leave it out when you only want to read the answer and see which sites Google cites, for example when you research a new topic or size up a competitor.
One check is a snapshot
AI Overviews appear for some searches and not others, and the answer and its sources can change from day to day. Results can also differ between countries and between desktop and mobile. Treat each check as a photo of one moment, not a fixed ranking.
To track AI Overviews properly, keep a short list of the searches that matter most to your business and check them on a regular schedule, such as once a week. Record three things each time: whether an AI Overview appeared, whether you were cited, and your organic position. After a few weeks you will see a pattern that a single check cannot show.
Choose those searches with care. Start with the keywords that already bring you customers, then add the questions buyers ask before they choose a provider and the topics your best guides cover. A short, focused list is enough to spot a trend, and it keeps tracking quick.
Ranking and being cited are not the same thing
The tracker shows both the cited sources and the top 10 organic results, so you can compare them directly. The two lists do not have to match. A page can rank in the top 10 without being cited, and a cited page may not be in the top 10 at all.
That gap tells you where to work. If you rank but are not cited, open the pages that are cited and study how they answer the search: how directly, how specifically and how early on the page. If competitors are cited and you are not ranking either, start with the basics of content quality and links before you aim for a citation. If you are cited but do not rank in the top 10, look at what that page does well and apply it to similar pages.
How to get cited in AI Overviews
There is no setting you can switch on to be cited. What helps is clear, useful content that is easy to quote:
- Answer the question early. Put a direct, plain answer near the top of the page, then add detail below it.
- Be specific. Use concrete facts, steps and examples you can stand behind. Vague text gives an AI little worth quoting.
- Structure the page. Clear headings, short paragraphs and lists make it easy to find the part of the page that answers each question.
- Make sure Google can index the page. A page Google cannot crawl or index cannot be used as a source.
- Build trust beyond your site. Links and mentions from respected sites in your field support your rankings and your reputation on the topic.
- Keep the page current. Update facts, dates and examples when they change, so readers and AI answers do not get stale information from you.

Track the rest of AI search too
AI Overviews are one part of AI search. Google's conversational AI Mode writes its own answers with its own sources, which you can check with the AI Mode tracker. Outside Google, the AI visibility checker asks ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity a buyer question and shows whether they mention your brand or cite your site.
